I am a newly recruited assistant producer in tudno studios as a game developer. my job is wide ranging and can be a variety of jobs within the game developement process.
In this blog i am going to show how the research into fighting games can help back up and support ideas within the games. I will show the methods of primary and secondary research within the games of research including a graph and i will describe why the primary research was obtained and why it is useful within the games industry. Iwill explain why i choose my secondary research.
I will show the primary and secondary research within a table. This will also help show a different methods like the mean mode and median and making sure all my calculations are correct. Finally i will show a number of calculations using percentages and fractions to help be more accurate.
I will use a survey using paper and distrube it to give a better detail of the age of the game i plan to sell and also the distrubution of the gender within the game i am sellingto give a better view of who will buy it more and the age it will appeal to the most.
Evaltuation
This research is meant to help support the games industry within my game concept which is a fighting game. This will show many types of secondary and some primary research to help my game gte a extra support on what it will be needed to help make the game become a top chart.
I will start off with some secondary research of fighting games within the games industry right now and to see how they are selling or comparing to other games within the games industry.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/103/1038384p1.html
some people reviewed tekken in this website saying that its lacked within skill as they find that the button mashers are usually the cheap winners and the ones with skills are usually too good. others said it is well made in some enviroments and is bad in other enviroments so the game has a lack of skill within the fighting game and needs help with the actual playing of the game especially when online as some have complained about the lagg within the game when online which can lead 2 faulty moves and unsure attacks. They continue to say that the games graphics are well made so the game has a few good and bad points within the game. the bad points show the games bad points and what were the issues within the games itself.
With guilty gear it is a 2d cartoon based fighting game however its ratings and review is told to be good as shown on http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox/action/guiltygearreload/review.html
they say that it brings back the old games and makes them really good but also shows that the game can be overpriced a bit for a few or that it isn't suited for everyone as the game is really fast but it has a unique selling point for it been alot faster and alot more hardcore than the others when it comes to considering the unique parts of a game that makes it better than the other games. it never laggs from the revivews andits speed is rly fast so for a new person to play fighting games would not be very good at the game unless he mashed but guilty gear has made it so that mashers cant win since their are unique combos which deal alot mroe damage than the actual fighting moves, also considering the game maynot be online however it makes up for its lack off online with its rebalancing of the game and the lack of negative replies within it showing more interest for the game and the fans of the game.
the ratings for the tekken 6 was 8.8 by IGN and 7.6 by the readers average within the game wiuth the press averaging it at 8.0 which shows it isn't a bad game even if the graphics and sometiems it laggs it shows that the game can still be good.the mean for the game is rated as 7.6+8+8.8= 24.4 24.4/3= 8.13 which shows a good rating
guilty gears ratings are varied but all above average the ratings are
9.5, 10, 10, 8.4, 10, 9.1, 9.7, 8.8, 8.0, 9.3, 9.6, 10, 7.9, 10, 9.1, 8.2, 9.3, 10, 9.7 and 9.8
so the best way to see the results here would be the median so in order the above 20 results
7.9, 8.0, 8.2, 8.4, 8.8, 9.1, 9.1, 9.3, 9.3, (9.5, 9.6), 9.7, 9.7, 9.8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10
as the brackets show this is the median but sicne there are 2 results they are added and divided by 2 to give the true medium so the true medium is (9.5+9.6= 19.1/2= 9.55) 9.55
I will show my primary research by using a peice of paper and asking people which games they like, how many days and hours they play averagely , their age, their gender, Their personal favorite genre, the consoles they play, do they play online?, how much they pay 4 a fighting game for a ps3, do they play with friends at their houses and finally do they find out the games by tv advertising or mail or any source of information.
This is the chart i had made to show what genres stick out the most of the 20 people i asked.
As the bar chart shows it shows that first person shooters RPG'S and fighting are the most played games right now making them the mode. Althoguh this can be a biast result as there are many games out right now and most of the games are usually fighting, first person shooter or RPG so it can show that the results could be in their favor also and with the low amount of results the accuracy can be very corrupt due to the questionaires only been asked by gamers mainly. so the results are not 100% accurate as the customer of a store and the people i ask could always be different. I obtained this information by asking relatives and also friends of mine using a questionaire so the questionaire could be biast as my friend could like a certain genre to other people i know and the strangers i could ask on the street may have a different liking to the ones in the offices. This information was obtained to show that fighting games are liked within the games industry and could be a great installment if they are successful with showing many fans which could mean alot of sales for the game if it is proven and made successfully.
With the gender of people who play games a more appealed 17 out of the 20 were men and 3 of the 20 were ladies as this shows that men play games alot mroe than women as women have other things they prefer to do.
The range of the the gender is 14 sicne the range is 17-3 which equals 14 this shows that from my questionaire there is likely going to be 14 more men than women who answer my questionaire, althoguh it could be that some of my friends who are female wanted to answer the questionaires about games while the others were not interested so it is still a bit biast with the results within the questionaire and it cannot be 100% proved but it shows that men play games more than women.
in secondary research it is estimated that uk gamers play games for a average of 11 hours a week on http://www.theaveragegamer.com/averagegamers/ to show the finding.
my average of my hours of gameplay means that i will need to calculate the mean of my results which is 1*4+(8*3)+ (6*5)+2*9+0+24= 4+24+30+18+0+24 = 100 which divided by 20 as the results leaves 5 hours but that is 5 hours a day so it is multiplied by 7 so it is a average of a gamer to play games for about 35 hours a week according to my findings which sahows that both of the results could be biast and it is really unclear on how many hours are played on games altogether. The flaw also is that the 11 hours could be ona basic normal school day while the 35 hours could be on a holiday.
The median for this is the middle of the total results by having the smallest to the largest and it is the middle one of the largest and the smallest hence the name median. so the median of the days of the week people play games is:
1-2 ,1-2 ,1-2 ,1-2 ,3-4 ,3-4 ,3-4 ,3-4 ,3-4 ,5-7 ,5-7 ,5-7 ,5-7, 5-7 ,5-7,5-7 ,5-7 , 5-7, 5-7, 5-7
5-7 and 5-7 are the median and since the gap difference on both are 5-7 the the difference is 5+7=12/2= 6 so the average people play on games for is estimated as 6 days a week according to my research and the medians result.
How many days per week do you play games on an average basis?
Primary research
How many days per week | tally | total |
1-2 | IIII | 4 |
3-4 | IIII | 5 |
5-7 | IIII IIII I | 11 |
20 | ||
Secondary research
As the secondary research shows it gives a good detail into how well or how often games are played and it supports my data in showing that more than likely people play games for a good average amount of time. This supports that my game will be played within a lot of time and can be both core and casual. The mode is 6-10 hours and 11-15 hours.
This is evidence of qualitive research with opinions of how many days per week do people play video games found on a forum which i found during my research. http://www.strikebang.com/archive/index.php/t-1565-p-2.html
with 17 of my 20 people in the questionaire been men i can assume that about 85% of men play computer games to the lower 15% playing computer games as well.
with the cost of the game it will show a good mean as to what people would pay for when selling the game so therefore the cost will be....
15+25+35+25+25+15+15+15+35+25+45+35+25+35+15+15+25+35+25+25=510 510/20=£25.50
so the mean is £25.50 which means the price of the game will most likely be around £25.50 since it is the publics best selling price for a game.
This pie chart shows the results form the people i asked on what they think they enjoy when playiong a game as in graphic terms e.g2D cartoon, 3D cartoon, 3D realistic, etc
This pie chart shows that 7 of the 20 people that i asked prefered 3D Realistic. 1 person of the 20 prefer all 3 types of graphics meaning they did not mind the graphics of the game. 2 people choose they prefer 2 of the above which means they only dislike one graphic of the 3 choosings so it is advisable to know that you could possibly make the game with 2 certain graphics on 2 different consoles.
4 of the 20 choose 2D cartoon graphics which shows that they dont mind if the graphics are very low and that it can be done for the customers but since 4 out of the 20 liked those type and the rest liked the other graphics or more than one i maynot make the game with 2D cartoon graphics. 6 of the 20 people who answered my questionaire said they prefered 3D graphics and overall it is the second highest answer of the question so it will be a possiblitiy of having the game more cartoon like on the consoles which cannot take very high graphics like the nntendo wii and the nintendo ds so it is a helpful answer if i decide after good sales to put the game on the consoles with the lower graphics.
Conclusion
In this blog it aimed to proved that the secondary and primary research is proven to be usefull.by secondary research it helps give a good detail on the internet that how peoples reviews of games appear to be but not everyone wants to do reviews and whilst primary is more detailed by friends, people within the country and also the help of understanding of who wants what type of game within the country. secondary research helps with who whats a certain type of game all over the world.
This will help support the profit within my game as it will show more details as to who i will be up against within the game industry and what other genres i may have to fight against.
Another detail i wanted this blog to prove is that it is very difficult to get extremely accurate details from just a few people when there are over 6,000,000,000 people within the world and everyone has different opinions to what they like in a game if they like it and if they do play games. A question i wanted to put in the blog was what country plays which game the most as it will help show in detail which countries prefer a certain type of genre to help support which languages i would need to the game to help get a good sale for the game.
if i was going to improve the questionaire i would have asked more people and have more questions like do you play games and if not why to help give a better idea of why those who dont play games dont and help fix the reason as to why they are not playing and perhaps help them enjoy the gaming experience rather than never play games at all.
